The narrative follows a young woman who has been placed in a difficult situation by her parents—forced into a medical career path she despises while struggling with feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

 She finds herself living with an elderly man named Jack, whom she helps around his house, seeking comfort from the loneliness of her life.  The story takes a turn when Jack offers to pay for her cleaning supplies, which feels like a veiled attempt at control or manipulation. As she walks home after buying them, she begins to feel as if someone is watching her—a growing sense of paranoia that escalates into a full-blown feeling of being stalked in her own shower.  

The excerpt ends with the protagonist trapped between her desire for independence and the unsettling kindness of an older man who seems to know more than he lets on, leaving her questioning whether she is losing her mind or if there is something sinister happening around her.
